WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 16, 2010) – If you were too late to get one of the 30,000 slots for the 35th
Annual Marine Corps Marathon, set for Sunday, October 31 in Arlington, Va., and Washington, D.C., the American Cancer Society can help. By visiting www.acsdetermination.org/dc and signing up for the Society’s DetermiNation™ program, you can compete in the Marine Corps Marathon while raising money and awareness for the fight against cancer. But you have to hurry – the Society only has 300 spots for The People’s Marathon.
DetermiNation is the American Cancer Society’s endurance athletic program that enables athletes to compete in key endurance events while raising money for cancer-fighting programs and services.
The Marine Corps Marathon is the fourth-largest marathon in the United States and eighth-largest in the world. It is the largest marathon not offering prize money.
“Space for the Marine Corps Marathon sells out quickly, but the American Cancer Society has 300 slots in the MCM for people who move quickly to secure them by signing up for our DetermiNation program,” said Bruce La Fleur, the Society’s Event Chairman. “And running in the Marine Corps Marathon can be even more rewarding if you participate in DetermiNation. You will have the satisfaction of competing in a world-class event while helping the American Cancer Society advance its mission to eliminate cancer.”
Last year, 200 DetermiNation participants in the Marine Corps Marathon raised more $270,000 for the American Cancer Society.
DetermiNation was born out of a program called Charity Runner, which began in 1996 in the American Cancer Society’s Illinois Division by an individual who wanted to run a marathon in memory of a friend he had lost to cancer. The Society has now expanded the program nationwide to include all types of endurance events for athletes of all abilities across a wide spectrum of events such as marathons, half marathons, triathlons and cycling races. Athletes will be able to dedicate their training and race experiences to the Society’s mission of fighting cancer and saving lives.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us any time, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
