BALTIMORE, MD – June 2, 2011 – The Upsilon Epsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presented a $500 donation to local staff of the American Cancer Society in honor of the Society’s efforts to save lives from cancer. The presentation took place at the Society’s office in White Marsh, Maryland.
Local representatives from both organizations discussed their interests in reducing health disparities and advocating for access to healthcare. Since late 2010, the national organizations of the American Cancer Society and Alpha Kappa Alpha have been joined by the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in collaboration to reduce cancer disparities among African Americans. The organizations focus on community-level engagement with Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters nationwide to encourage regularly scheduled cancer screenings, healthy dietary habits, regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco use.
