HUNDREDS IN SOUTHERN MARYLAND TO JOIN IN THE AREA’S FIRST AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER ON OCTOBER 7

WHAT:

Hundreds of local breast cancer survivors, volunteers, businesses and community members will walk together as a unified force to end breast cancer at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, a four-mile, noncompetitive walk-a-thon.  This is the 20th anniversary nationally of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, but the first year that it will take place in Southern Maryland.  This inspirational event raises awareness and funds to help end breast cancer by supporting the Society’s efforts to find cures and support programs and services for all people facing the disease.  More than 270 Making Strides walks are being held across the country this October.

This year, more than 226,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die from the disease.  One in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to the American Cancer Society for information and help. Funds raised through Making Strides enable the Society to provide free resources and support; to invest in groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer; and to ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.
