American Cancer Society National Board Chair to Join Thousands in Norfolk, VA to Make Strides Against Breast Cancer

WHAT:

Thousands of local breast cancer survivors, volunteers, businesses and community members will walk together as a unified force to end breast cancer at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, a three-mile, noncompetitive walk.  This is the 20th anniversary nationally of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. This inspirational event raises awareness and funds to help end breast cancer by supporting the Society’s efforts to find cures and support programs and services for all people facing the disease.  More than 270 Making Strides walks are being held across the country this Fall.

American Cancer Society National Volunteer Board Chair Cynthia LeBlanc will be on-hand to sign a collaborative agreement with Sentara Health System and Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System aimed at reducing breast cancer mortality rates in local African-American women (signing will be at 8:30 a.m. at the stage).

This year, more than 226,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die from the disease.  One in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to the American Cancer Society for information and help. Funds raised through Making Strides enable the Society to provide free resources and support; to invest in groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer; and to ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.
