NATIONAL CANCER PREVENTION STUDY-3 BALTIMORE AREA SEPT. 9 – 15; HARFORD CO. NOV. 7 – 11 and OTHER MARYLAND COUNTIES IN THE NEXT YEAR

 The American Cancer Society seeks to understand the genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors that cause cancer through a 20 to 30-year landmark study which builds on CPS2 that linked obesity to cancer risk and a daily aspirin to reduced risk of dying from cancer

WHAT: Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3) of the American Cancer Society is a chance to fight back against cancer and help save lives. By enrolling in the study, volunteers will help the American Cancer Society reach its ultimate goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem. The study seeks a diverse group of 300,000 Americans nationally, including 1,000 volunteers from Baltimore. Walk-ins welcome or register for an appointment:  www.CPS3baltimore.org

CPS-3 will help cancer researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. The famous CPS-1 study established the link between smoking and lung cancer took place in the 1950s. Recent CPS-2 findings have linked obesity to cancer risk and a daily aspirin to reduced risk of dying from cancer.

Volunteers must be:

  • Age 30 to 65 and have never been diagnosed with cancer (except for basal or squamous cell skin carcinoma)
  • Provide a waist measurement and give a small blood sample
  • Complete a comprehensive survey and follow-up surveys every few years.

CPS3 enrollment will take place in Harford County November 7 – 11. Locations include Upper Chesapeake Hospital and Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Department. See www.CPS3harford.org. The Tri-County Upper Shore will hold enrollment November 7 – 10.  Over the next year, enrollments will take place in Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Washington Counties, with a goal of more than 5,000 CPS-3 enrollees in Maryland.
